In first-ever Green Wave Gathering, abortion rights activists unite across borders

In February, Ipas and partners brought together abortion rights activists from Latin America and the U.S. in a historic step toward cross-border collaboration for reproductive justice.

As the U.S. grapples with a rollback of abortion rights, Latin America’s “Green Wave” feminist movement has been sweeping away restrictive laws and mobilizing a powerful force for change. That’s why Ipas partnered with the Women’s Equality Center and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice to host the first-ever Green Wave Gathering. This historic event brought together over 120 abortion-rights leaders from the U.S. and Latin America for two days in Washington, D.C., to share experiences and ideas for advancing reproductive justice.

Sharing struggles, doubling impact

Discussions at the gathering focused on tackling misinformation, supporting access to abortion with pills and self-managed abortion, building pathways to care in places with restrictive laws, movement building, stories as agents of change and more. The event allowed reproductive health, rights and justice  leaders from across the Americas to share their unique experiences and expertise, fostering transnational collaboration and laying the groundwork for future united action.

“We shared stories and strategies and forged connections that will last beyond the gathering,” says Bethany Van Kampen Saravia, senior legal and policy advisor for Ipas U.S. “This isn’t just a one-time event; it’s a spark to ignite a global movement for reproductive justice.”

Ipas will continue its work with partners to bring together abortion rights leaders from across the Americas, including through future Green Wave Gatherings.

The Green Wave Gathering ended with a powerful public action called a “pañuelazo” in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., where participants from both the U.S. and Latin America threw their green bandanas (pañuelos) into the air, sang together, and stood together as a united front. Green bandanas have become the widely recognized symbol of the Green Wave movement.
