Across Africa, movements for abortion rights and access are growing. But powerful cultural, religious, and political barriers persist in many countries, driving people to seek abortion with unsafe methods. Indeed, the most common cause of maternal death in Africa is complications from unsafe abortion—a completely preventable tragedy.
Ipas works with partners in countries throughout Africa to expand access to abortion and contraception, and to reduce needless deaths from unsafe abortion. We also educate communities on reproductive health and work for laws and policies that support abortion access across the continent. Our varied approaches are tailored to address the diverse barriers to abortion that people face in different settings.
