Geography lessons—expanding safe abortion care
Where a woman lives in relation to where the nearest reproductive health-care provider is located can mean the difference between life and death. Imagine a woman in a mountain village in India. To get to a safe abortion provider she must travel many miles on foot to the nearest town for a bus to take her and her two children on crumbling roads through the Himalayas—just that part of her journey may take days.
At Ipas we’re working to expand abortion care so that women living outside of urban centers don’t have to face geographic barriers. To do this, we:
- Train midwives and nurses—who far outnumber physicians in many countries— to provide safe abortion care, including contraceptive counseling.
- Work to increase knowledge and use of medical abortion, a safe alternative for pregnancy termination.
- Work with health systems to increase sustainability and efficiency of service sites.
